Advanced Member Guide
If you have already created a Megabunk account (see "Creating a Megabunk Account") and have followed the "Quick Setup Guide", then your profile will probably now be available in search results if you are a "Host" or "Event" member. Beyond the basic settings there are a number of other optional elements that you can customise to get the best out of Megabunk and to provide an informative profile for those searching. This guide assumes that you have already created an account and have read the "Quick Setup Guide".
In the hopefully unlikely event that you wish close your Megabunk account, you can do so by going to the "Preferences" section of "Edit Profile". Scroll down the page and you will find a link near the bottom and to the right called "Close account". Click on this link and follow the instructions to close your account. Usernames belonging to closed accounts are stored so that they cannot be chosen again in th future by anybody else.
It is possible to create up to 10 accounts for one email address if you are joining as a "Host" or "Event" member. This can be very useful if you have several different locations, each with different criteria and you want to create a different profile for each one. If you run several email addresses then you can set them up on different email addresses if you wish, but there are advantages to creating accounts on the same email address
that you don't get with accounts on different addresses. One of these advantages is the ability to show a list of all your other accounts on each profile effectively linking them together and casting a wider net. They might land on your profile and decide that it's not quite what they were looking for. Having a list of your other locations gives them an opportunity to stay in your circle. The options for this are explained further on. Another major advantage to creating accounts on the same email is the use of profile notifications, which is also explained in more detail further on in this guide.
When you are on the registration page, pay close attention to the text shown after the Email field. When you first join it will show "10 available". When you create a second account using the same email address it will show "9 available" and so on. Multiple accounts can only be created for "Host" and "Event" members. Larger organisations can also take advantage of this system. It is possible to create more than 10 accounts on one email but only through application via the Megabunk contact form. Each case will be individually reviewed.
When you have multiple accounts on the same email address it is assumed that you will be managing each one. One difficulty that can arise in having multiple accounts is having to log in and out of each one. If several accounts are sharing the same email address then it follows that the login details for all those accounts will be known by the same person. So we've created a way for you to seamlessly move between accounts that share the same email address, without the need to keep on logging out and logging back in again.
To switch accounts, hover over your username when logged in at the top right of any page on Megabunk.
If you have mulitple accounts on the same email address you will see "Switch to" links for each of those accounts at the bottom of the pop up list. Simply click on one of those switch links to switch to that account. Once done it will be as if you logged out and logged back in again but without all the hassle of physically doing so.
Linking to Megabunk
At Megabunk we've tried to make it easy for you to link back to our site. Whether it be to the Megabunk home page, or your profile. For this purpose we have created a "Link to us" page.
Creating a link or link button
Creating a text link or link button couldn't be much easier. Just select the type of button or text link that you wish. Where you want it to go to and how you want it to behave. If you are logged in then you will see the page below.
If you are not logged in then the only links that will be available are those to the home page.
After the link options you will see an example of how your link will look and to the right there will be a text box with some HTML in it. You can copy and paste that HTML to your website, blog etc and the link shown on the left should appear on the page you place your code.
QR codes are explained a little on the "Link to us" page. In short they are 2 dimensional barcodes that can be used for a number of purposes. At the bottom of the "Link to us" page you will see two QR codes (if you are logged in).
Both these codes link directly to a webpage when scanned with certain mobile devices. The code on the left links to the Megabunk home page and the code on the right links to your profile. Right-click and save these images to your computer. Then use them anywhere you like. On websites, on stationary. Even on T-Shirts. Be scanned!
Facebook and Twitter updates
Whenever you make any changes to your profile settings via "Edit Profile", a "Save Changes" button appears. Once you click the "Save Changes" button, Megabunk will proceed to update your information. If successful then you will be presented with and "Update succeeded" message, followed by a few buttons.
Once you have made your changes you may wish to let your followers on Facebook and Twitter know about them. Megabunk has made this easy for you by providing pre-loaded Twitter and Facebook buttons. All you need to do is click and post.
Changing your password
On the "Basic Info" page of profile editing, you will see a link that says "Change password". This statement is pretty self-explanatory. If you wish to change your account password then click on the "Change password" link.
When the link is clicked a few input boxes will appear. Type in your new password and then retype the new password in the second box. If the passwords are valid and match then you will be told that. Click the "Save changes" button to save your new password.
Changing your location
When you create a Megabunk account you select a location from a drop down list. When editing your profile you can refine your location in the "Location" section by dragging and dropping your marker. Although this changes your actual location, it doesn't change the city or town displayed on your profile. If you want the city or town displayed on your profile to be different then go to the "Location" section of "Edit profile" and above the Google map you will see two boxes.
Start to type the Town or City that you want to change to and then select the one you want from the drop down list. You can use partial words in any order. Once you have found what you are looking for click the "Move marker to location" button. You should see the marker move and the "Save changes" button will appear. Once you have saved your changes, the location you selected should appear on your profile. You will probably have to drag and drop the marker to your exact location again as it will have been moved by the previous process.
The other box you can see is "Hometown". If you live in a location that is not available in our database then you can choose the nearest location that is in the database, and then type your exact location, be it a village or settlement etc. into the Hometown box and save the changes. This will then appear in your profile information.
Editing your criteria
The "Accommodation Type" criteria was covered in the "Quick Setup Guide". All the elements of the "Criteria" section of "Edit Profile" are used to help those searching narrow down their results if a general search returns too many results. It also helps searchers to find locations with specific facilities or conditions.
Don't forget to save any changes made.
The first part of the "Criteria" section comprises of multiple choice options.
All these are optional. The top choice on each item is default and is not displayed on profiles and search results. However if you opted for "No pets", then this would be displayed on your profile and search result. Anybody searching can use this criteria to refine their search, so those looking for establishments that do not allow pets in your area will be shown your result (that is if all other criteria that may have been set are satisfied).
Setting a religion
The other items in the criteria are from lists because the options are many. First of those options is "Religion".
If "Religion" is left as "Unspecified" then it will not be shown in profiles. Setting a religion is a personal choice. Some of you might want to state your religion for others who might be looking for Accommodation or Events. As this is used as part of the criteria, searchers can specifiy a religion when looking in your area.
As this global society doesn't all speak the same language, it makes sense to have a "Language" criteria. Travellers who don't speak your language very often have an interest in the native language of the land they are visiting. If you speak both it may be invaluable to them. With Megabunk you can select more than one language. So if you speak seven languages, you can select them all! Languages are also a criteria that can be used in search results so if you're multi-lingual, make sure you set the languages you can speak.
Accommodation and Events have varying facilities and we've included what we consider to be the five most important
types of facility. All of these can be used to narrow down search results, so if you have wifi or disabled facilities then make sure you set them in your criteria. Leaving any of these item as "Do not show" will hide them from your profile and search results.
There are many combinations of other criteria and endless ways in which people like to represent it. If you have any particular conditions attached to your Accommodation or Event that is not covered by the Megabunk "Criteria" section then be sure to include this information in your profile description.
Editing your preferences
The "Preferences" section of "Edit Profile" is more about customising elements of your account for you. You can use your Megabunk profile as just a search result listing that links through to your own website or at the other end of the scale you can use all the facilities and options available to you. If you do not have your own website, you can use your Megabunk profile as your control centre. The "Preferences" sections lets you switch on and off certain elements.
Showing a Google map
Showing a mini Google map on your profile is purely cosmetic. It's just there to show visitors you on a map to give them a sense of location.
Showing a calendar
The Megabunk calendar is one of the optional tools you can use. It retains the previous six months and two years into the future. How you edit your calendar is shown further on in this guide. Selecting to show the calendar in your preferences displays two relevant months of dates on your profile. If someone has arrived at your profile through a direct link or a general search then the present and following months will be shown. If someone performs a Megabunk search and sets the search criteria to show availability on certain date then clicking on the search result link to your profile will show the month for the date they are looking for and the following month. Visitors to your profile can scroll through your entire calendar (excluding expired months).
New calendar dates available by default
Every month a new month is added to your calendar and an old month is removed. If you have "New calendar dates available by default" selected in your preferences then all the days in the newly added month will be shown as available. If it is not selected then all dates in the new month will be shown as unavailable.
Show gender and Show age
The "Show Gender" and "Show Age" checkboxes in your preferences are purely cosmetic only. Selecting either of these will display that information on your profile. The age is calculated from the date of birth entered when joining Megabunk.
The "Show Pricing" preference displays pricing information on your profile and in search results. By default, the currency displayed will be the currency for the country you are in. If you wish to display your prices in a different currency then you can select that currency from the "Currency" sub-option.
The minimum and
maximum price shown can be set in the sub-fields for "Show Pricing". For pricing to be displayed the minimum price must be greater than zero. Let's assume the currency is U.S. Dollars. So if you put a minimum of 80 and a maximum of 100, "$80 to $100" will be displayed. If the maximum price is less than the minimum price and say the minimum price was 80 then "From $80" would be displayed. If your account is a "Host" account then "per night" will be added to the end of the price guide.
If the person viewing your search result or profile happens to be in a country where the currency is different to your chosen currency then they will still be shown the pricing in your currency, but they will also be shown a rough conversion of your prices to their own currency based upon currency conversion rates no older that 24 hours.
Show minimum stay
If you have a "Host" account then there will be a preference to "Show minimum stay". Selecting this will display this information in your profile and in your search result. The values that can be selected in "Minimum stay" are between two and seven days.
Allow public to register for notifications
For those of you that wish to become a little more involved with Megabunk, you can select the preference "Allow public to register for notifications". This allows visitors to your profile to register for notifications from you. The profile notifications system is a bit like having your own opt in mailing list but without the email addresses. How you send out your notifications is explained further on.
Mail contact preferences
The "Mail" preferences determine what we send emails to you about. Most of these preferences are self-explanatory. It's worth pointing out the preference "Send me Notifications by Email". In the previous section we briefly touched on allowing the public to register for notifications. All members of Megabunk can also register for Notifications but with a username instead of an email address. Notifications are explained further on in this guide. The "Send me Notifications by Email" preference does not apply to notifications that you have signed up to with your email address.
The last preference is "Agressive blocking". Only other members of Megabunk can be blocked from interacting with you. The manner in which they are blocked can be determined by this preference. Although the blocking process in "Agressive blocking" is the same as "Passive blocking", there are differences in how the attempts to interact with you are dealt with. When a blocked person attempts interaction with your account and the blocking is passive then they will not be aware that you do not receive messages sent from them and it will appear that the favouriting doesn't work. With "Agressive blocking" they will be told that the failure of interaction is because they have been blocked.
The Megabunk messaging system
Megabunk has in internal messaging system for members. These messages can also be forwarded to your registered email addresses in your "Mail" preferences.
Sending and receiving messages to other Megabunk members is simple. There is an Inbox and Sent folder that is accessible by hovering over "Mail" at the top right of any page when logged in and selecting either "Inbox" or "Sent" from the pop up menu. Clicking on the username in the mail list takes you to that members profile. Clicking on the Subject opens the message for reading. Once you've opened a message in your Inbox there is an option to reply to the sender (if they have not blocked you). When you click the "Reply" button you will be taken to a page where you can compose your reply. Once completed you will need to type the correct captcha code and the "Send Message" button.
Favoriting and Blocking
As well as the Megabunk Inbox and Sent list. There are also lists for Favorites and Blocked members.
The favorites list is useful for keeping a list of members that you might regularly contact as there is a contact link for each one in the list. This saves navigating to their profiles and clicking on the contact links there.
The Blocked list looks similar to the Favorites list except instead of a "Contact" link there is an "Unblock" link . Useful for when you wish a previously blocked user to resume contact with you through Megabunk.
Using the Megabunk calendar
The Megabunk calendar is great for organising your booked dates. It can also be used as criteria in Megabunk searches. Showing potential customers dates that you may have available or already booked. You can gain access to your Megabunk calendar by hovering over your username at the top right of any page on Megabunk and selecting "Calendar" from the pop up list.
You will find a legend to the color codes at the bottom of the "Calender" page. The default year that appears is the current year. You can navigate the available years by clicking on the year links above the calendar. Active dates on the calendar can exist in two states. "Available" and "Unavailable". "Available" dates are shown in green and "Unavailable" dates are shown in pink. You can toggle dates on and off by clicking directly on them or turn entire months on and off by clicking the "All on" or "All off" links above each month. When you have finished altering the dates, click the "Save changes" button.
Your Megabunk profile is your centre of action. This is where searchers on Megabunk and other major search engines can end up when looking for Events or Accommodation. Click on your username on the site at any time to visit your public profile. Make sure that you check out your own profile after you have made any changes to your account settings to make sure you are happy with the alterations.
QR bookmark code
One of the first things you may notice on your profile is the QR code near the top left. This is not a direct link to your profile. It is what is called a QR Bookmark Code. There's no point putting a direct QR link to your profile, on your profile because viewers will already be there. Instead we have provided a Bookmark code for QR readers that will allow them to bookmark your page on their device.
Preferences and criteria in action
Looking down the left of your profile you will see some of your profile information.
The type of information displayed is dependant upon the Criteria and Preferences you set when editing your profile. Hovering over certain items will pop up some descriptive text.
Earlier we touched on Notifications. There are settings in your preferences for notifications.
A notification is a message sent by you to anyone who has subscribed to your notification list. There are two ways that people can subscribe to notifications from you. The first is
favoriting your profile. When another Megabunk member favourites your profile, they are accepting future notifications from you, but only whilst they have your profile favorited.
The second way is by non-members or those logged out.
If you have checked the preference "Allow public to register for notifications", any visitor who is not logged in will see the @ symbol displayed above your profile information. Clicking on this symbol will pop up a box where they can register their email address for notifications from you. The system is double opt in so they will have to confirm their email address before they can register.
To send out notifications you will need to visit the profile you are logged into. Once there you should see the following "Send Notification" link above your profile information.
The best thing about broadcasting a profile notification is that it doesn't have to apply solely to one account. If you have several Megabunk accounts sharing the same email address then you can send out a single notification to all subscribers on all shared accounts. Clicking on the "Send Notification" link will bring up the following.
The "Scope" option determines which notification lists are sent to. If set to "This" then messages will be sent to all those who have subscribed to this profile only. "All" will send the message to all subcribers to all profiles sharing the same email as the one you are logged in to.
The "Include Non-Members" checkbox will send the message to both types of subscribers. Those members who have favorited your profile and those who have signed up for notifications with their email address.
It's probably best to prepare your notification message beforehand then copy and paste it into the notifications message box. Type in the correct captcha code and click the "OK" button to send your notification. Try to be sparing with your Notifications. Most people get tired of regular messages from the same person trying to sell them something. Even if they have signed up for those notifications. To retain you Notification subscribers and to get the greatest impact out of your messages, the key is to send few and far between.
Notifications are spread out over a twent four hour period. So if your message was being sent to
240 subscribers then they would be sent at a rate of 10 per hour.
Because notifications can possibly send out large numbers of emails, there are tight restrictions on how many can be sent over a certain time period. Not a retriction on the amout of people you can send to but a restriction on how many different messages you can send.
If you forget your password at any time you can retrieve it by clicking the "forgot" link at login. Click the "Login" link near the top right of any page on Megabunk (you obviously have to be logged out).
To the right of the "Login" button you will see a small link entitled "forgot". Click on that link to be taken to the "Forgot password" form.
Type in your account username and the registered email address for that username. Then type in the correct captcha code and click the "Retrieve account Details" button. This process will send an email to your registered email address, containing your login details.
