The user guide has been developed to help you understand all the elements of Megabunk that you might encounter as a visitor to the site. A video has also been developed to guide you through the elements. You can watch it here. If you have Accommodation of any type or an Event that you wish to promote then create a Megabunk account. Details on how to do that are here. There is also a Quick Setup Guide and an Advanced Member guide to help you get the best from your Megabunk account.
The Home page
The home page might be the very first page you visit on the site. It contains a welcome message and links to other useful pages on the site. You can go back to the home page from virtually any other page on the site by clicking the Megabunk icon at the top lef of the page or by clicking the link bar provided at the bottom of the page.
Information and Statistics
To the left of the home page you will see a few information boxes. The first of those features "New members". This is a list of "Host" and "Event" members that have recently signed up to Megabunk. Each is a link to their profile. As a rule, the link will show up in this list seven days after joining and then only if the members account is active and visible in the search. Having that seven day delay allows new members time to put some content into their profile before being featured. Profile links move down the list as new members join.
Below the "New members" box there is the "Random statistics". This speaks for itself. It just throws up a random statistic about Megabunk every time the page is loaded into the viewers browser.
As well as being featured on the "New members" list, Megabunk profiles are also featured on the "Random profiles" section of the home page.
The first result is returned from the viewers own country and the rest are from other nations of the world. To qualify for being randomly featured on the home page your account needs to be active. It needs to be visible in the search and you need to have images uploaded. Random profile feature is currently only available for "Host accounts".
Linking to Megabunk
At Megabunk we've tried to make it easy for you to link back to our site. Whether it be to the Megabunk home page, or your profile. For this purpose we have created a "Link to us" page. You can find a link to the "Link to us" page on any page on the site by going to the link bar at the bottom of the page.
Creating a link or link button
Creating a text link or link button couldn't be much easier. Just select the type of button or text link that you wish. Where you want it to go to and how you want it to behave. If you are logged in then you will see the page below.
If you are not logged in then the only links that will be available are those to the home page.
After the link options you will see an example of how your link will look and to the right there will be a text box with some HTML in it. You can copy and paste that HTML to your website, blog etc and the link shown on the left should appear on the page where you place your code.
QR codes are explained a little on the "Link to us" page. In short they are 2 dimensional barcodes that can be used for a number of purposes. At the bottom of the "Link to us" page you will see two QR codes (if you are logged in).
Both these codes link directly to a webpage when scanned with certain mobile devices. The code on the left links to the Megabunk home page and the code on the right links to your profile. Right-click and save these images to your computer. Then use them anywhere you like. On websites, on stationary. Even on T-Shirts. Be scanned!
You will find a search box near the top left of all pages on the Megabunk website. The search works very much like other search engines. Type in the location or event you are looking for and a list of suggestions will pop up if available for the terms you have typed. Select the location/event from the list and then click the search button to be taken to the results page.
Types of results to return
The suggestion pop up list shows a maximum of 30 results. You can narrow down the type of results shown in the suggestion box by specifiying a search type using the radio buttons to the right of the search box.
"By all" shows all results. "By location" shows geographical locations only. "By Event" shows events only.
You can also specifiy a date to search.
This will still return all results but you can refine your search on the search results page to only include results where members with active calendars have that date available. The reasons for this are explained further on in the section covering the search results page.
Constructing your search terms
Megabunk does specific searching within its own site. So therefore pattern matching can be more general than some other search engines without affecting performance or the quality of results. Some other search engines will only search for complete words, but Megabunk will allow for partial word matching. So if you are not quite sure on the spelling then you can try with incomplete words.
Your words (or partial words) can be in any order and if you are searching for a specific string that might return a lot of results for the combined words, you can enclose your string in quotes and it will search for the words you typed in the order you typed them.
Selecting from the search drop down menu
Once you see the location or event in the pop up list on the search box, click on that location or event and then click the search button to go to the search results page. As mentioned before, the pop up list not only shows geographical locations, but it also shows events. Geographical locations are shown on a white background and Events are shown on a green background. This is also reflected on the search results page.
You can still click the search button without selecting an item from the list. In this case Megabunk will try to make a guess based upon the information you entered. Not incredibly accurate but it does try. As you will discover later on in this guide your search location can be very specific.
Once you've selected your location in the search box and clicked the "Search" button, you will be taken to the search results page. Here you can view your results in different ways and also refine your search using the preferences available.
There are a couple of ways that you can see your results on the search results page. Both ways are interactive. Results are returned at up to ten per page and are strictly in a geographical order from the point of your search.
Above, and to the right of the google map you will see how many results have been returned for your search in total and over what distance radius. Below the google map you will find your results in geographical order. Above and below those results and to the right you can navigate to further results if any.
If the member has uploaded images to their profile then you will see a thumbnail of their main image in the results. Next to the image is the icon depicting their type of accommodation. Hover over this icon for a description. If the member is using the Megabunk calendar then that icon will also appear. Further icons relate to the members criteria. Hover over each of these icons for a description of what they mean. To the right of each result you will see a stated distance. This is the distance from your search location. You can choose to view this distance in Miles or Kilometres in the search preferences shown on the left of the search results. Below the icons is the beginning of the members profile description. Click on the Search heading or image to visit that particular profile.
Above some results you will see a price guide. The price shown will be in the currency of the Megabunk member that owns that profile, or the currency they have selected to display. If you are searching from a location that has a different currency then you will be shown a rough currency conversion to your own currency in brackets. The conversion rate is based on quotes that are no older than twenty four hours.
As well as the price guide you may also see a minimum stay. Not all members will display this but those that do are stating the minimum amount of nights that can be booked.
If you performed a search that returned Accommodation and Event results then any Event search results will have a green background to differentiate them from the Accommodation results.
Viewing results on the Google map
Results can also be viewed on the Google map by clicking on any of the icons shown on the map.
Hovering over the icon will tell you the type of accommodation and the members username. Clicking on the icon will pop up an informtion window with the Megabunk members heading, main image (if any are uploaded), accommodation type. You will be shown any pricing details and minimum stay if set. You can visit the members profile by clicking on their heading or the main profile image.
You can also view the Google map in different ways such as the Satellite view. by clicking on the links at the top right of the map. This can be very helpful when trying to track down particular landmarks that might not ordinarily be on a standard road map.
Snapshot of available dates
Members that use their Megbunk calendars will have a calendar icon displayed on their profile. On a search where the date is not specified the icon is displayed in colour. Hovering over the calendar icon on this type of search will show the imformation "Calendar active".
If you perform a search and specifiy a date on that search then the calender icon will behave differently. All results are returned when selecting a date but those results that do not have the selected date available will display a grayed out calendar. The purpose for this becomes clear when hovering over the calendar icons.
Hovering over the icons display a snapshot of available dates over the four weeks following the date you selected. This is useful for those that are flexible with their dates and want to go to a specific area. You can choose to display available results only by ticking the "Available date only" checkbox in the "Search preferences".
Refining your search
If you find that too many results have been returned for your search you can narrow them down using the search preferences. Every time you make a change to any of the search preferences, your results will automatically update.
Search preferences such as the distance units shown or the "Available date only" preference are stored in a cookie in your browser so that any subsequent searches from other pages on Megabunk will retain that criteria. Other search criteria are reset when you leave the search page. However navigating back to the search page using the "Back" button on your browser will normally retain the selected criteria.
Dragging the search marker
One disadvantage to searching by location from a location database is the point at which your search can take place. If the selected location happens to be a large town it can often be quite a distance from where you might actually want to go. You might want to be closer to a particular landmark or an attraction that is not in the database. Megabunk has got around this by allowing you to drag and drop the search marker.
So if there's a particular hill that you are fond of or you want to be as close to your favourite lakeside view as possible then you can pick up the marker with your mouse and drop it on the exact location you want. Use the satellite view to help you pinpoint landmarks.
When you drop the marker on the map the search result will automatically update based upon where you placed your search marker.
Zoom in and out of the map for greater accuracy and if the location you are looking for is outside the boundaries of your search area, you can grab and move the map around with your mouse, revealing the adjcacent area.
You may have a location in mind and when you search for it on Megabunk you find that there are no results close enough. Your next step would probably be to try other websites and Megabunk will certainly not discourage you from doing so. However, Megabunk does have neat little trick up its sleeve when it comes to searching. You can sign up for "Search notifications". It's a double opt-in messaging system that alerts you when someone joins Megabunk in your notification area.
At the bottom of the search results you will see a link as shown above. Click on this link to bring up the new account notification dialog box.
Signing up for these types of notifications will put you on a customised geographical mailing list based upon your notification preferences. Enter the email address you wish to be notified at. Next select the type(s) of new members you wish to be notified about. Thirdly select your notification radius. This is the radius in distance from your search marker. You will receive a notification about any type of member you selected that joins within your notification radius. Finally enter the correct captcha code. As this is double opt-in you will be sent an email to activate your notification. Click on the link provided within this email to activate your notification.
It is possible to create multiple new account notifications although there is a limit. Megabunk tries to use efficiency when sending out notifications and if a new member joins in a location where you have two or more notifications that overlap the location of the new member then only one message will be sent to you. Not one for each notification.
It is important to point out that notifications are sent out a week after the member creates their Megabunk account. This is to allow them time to put some content into their profile. There's no point receiving a notification about an empty profile, so giving our members some time to fill out their profile is good for them and possibly more informative for you.
There are a number of ways that you might arrive at a Megabunk profile. Through a Megabunk search or feature or through a direct link. Direct links can be from many sources including major search engines and other websites.
A Megabunk profile usually contains some information about the "Accommodation" or "Event" associated with it. It should also be possible to contact the owner of the Megabunk profile in some way. Whether it be through the public contact form, a website link or the megabunk messaging system.
Viewing a members Calendar
If a Megabunk member is using their calendar then it will be visible on their profile and an icon will also be shown next to their result in the Megabunk search.
At the bottom of the profile you will see two months of calendar. If you've clicked on a direct link to the Megabunk members profile, the months shown will be the current month and the following month. If you performed a search on Megabunk and specified a date, then clicked on their result in the search, you will be shown the month that the date occurs in and the following month (unless it's at the calendar limit which is about two years in the future).
You can scroll through all the active months on a members Megabunk calendar by clicking the "Prev" and "Next" links above the calendar months.
Signing up for Profile Notifications
Another option for Megabunk members is to allow the public to sign up for profile notifications. If you see an "@" sign on the left of the profile above the username then that Megabunk member has notifications switched on. Signing up for a profile notification is a bit like joining a mailing list. The profile owner will be able to broadcast notification messages to all those that have signed up on this profile and other profiles that share the same email address. There is a tight limit on how many notifications they can send in a set period. When you sign up for Profile Nitifications your email address is not revealed to the Megabunk member.
To sign up for profile notifications, click on the "@" symbol on the left of the profile. and you should see the following window pop up.
Type in your email address and the correct captcha code. If you have done this correctly then you should receive an email from Megabunk containing an activation link. Click on that link to activate the notification.
Contacting Megabunk members
There are two possible ways to contact megabunk members. One of those ways is through Megabunk using the profile contact form. If the Megabunk member has messaging switched on then you should see an envelope icon above their username on their profile. Clicking on that envelope will take you to a contact form. If you are a member of Megabunk you can contact the user by using the Megabunk messaging system.
Megabunk users may also have a link to their own website on their profile. This is another possible way of contacting them if they have contact facilities on their website. This form of contact is out of the control of Megabunk.
There may be a number of reasons that you may wish to contact Megabunk. If you cannot find the answers to your questions in the help guides or videos. If you have a complaint or suggestion. If you've spotted a problem with the site. To send a message to Megabunk, use the Megabunk contact form. You can find a link to the contact form at the bottom of every page. When on the contact form, select a reason for contacting us from the drop down list then type in your message in the box provided. Enter the correct captcha code and click "Submit contact information". We will do our best to answer your queries.
Search and Profile notifications are very handy. Every time you sign up for a notification, or receive a notification email that you signed up for, all the emails associated with it also contain an unsubscribe link so that you can remove yourself from that particular notification. but if you have signed up for several notifications and want to remind yourself of which ones you have signed up for you can request a message to review your notifications by clicking the following link:
Review my Notifications
This will send you an email listing all your notifications and an unsubscribe link for each one.
